While attending an immigration court and escorting a person out of a courthouse on Tuesday, masked federal officials detained Brad Lander, the comptroller of New York City and a contender for mayor. Lander was detained for assaulting law enforcement and obstructing a federal official, according to a statement from Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin of the Department of Homeland Security.
Did Lander actually obstruct or assault federal agents?
Lander stated that he most definitely did not attack a cop when he was released. Lander showed up at 26 Federal Plaza to see immigration proceedings for people who were on deportation lists. He explained to a reporter for the Associated Press that he was there to help some immigrants leave the building. Lander made his third trip to an immigration court in the past month on Tuesday.
What does video footage reveal about the arrest?
Video evidence of the event shows that he was detained as he and his staff were walking with an immigrant, subsequently identified by Lander as “Edgardo,” whose case had been rejected earlier in the day awaiting appeal, according to AMNY. Videos of the event show and hear Lander asking the immigration authorities whether they had a court order. According to more video of the arrest, Lander tells the officers, “I’m not obstructing. Right here in the corridor, I am standing. I requested to view the court order.”
As the officials lead Edgardo to an elevator, Lander seems to be clinging to his shoulder.
Barnette described the experience as upsetting and terrible during a press conference following the arrest, saying she was really proud of her husband.
Reporters on the scene from the City reported seeing masked agents from the FBI, the Treasury Department, Ice, Enforcement and Removal Operations, and other federal agencies lined the hallways of 26 Federal Plaza on Tuesday morning. Social media was flooded with news and video of the arrest.
How are political leaders responding to Lander’s arrest?
In addition to cross-endorsing Lander, Zohran Mamdani, a mayoral contender, denounced fascism’s arrest, requested his release, and stated that all New Yorkers must speak with one voice.
Senator Julia Salazar of New York State described the arrest as another proof that Ice officers are blatantly violating the law. The arrest, according to former New York Governor and Lander’s mayoral opponent Andrew Cuomo, is the most recent instance of Trump’s ICE acting in an unmanageable manner.
Kathy Hochul, the governor of New York, referred to the arrest as “bullshit.” The accusations against Lander were subsequently withdrawn late Tuesday afternoon, she stated at a press conference.
How were protests erupted outside 26 Federal Plaza?
Additionally, on Tuesday afternoon, a protest erupted outside 26 Federal Plaza, with supporters yelling for Brad Lander’s release. Surrounded by metal barriers and a tight police cordon, protesters held aloft signs that said, “Immigrants are New York” and “fascist minion.” Despite being a public facility, the building’s entrance was closed to the public.
Is ICE targeting political figures ahead of elections?
The arrest of Lander coincides with the ongoing practice of federal immigration officers making arrests outside immigration courtrooms around the United States. According to a story, the number of arrests of immigrants without criminal records has increased by 807% between early January, just before the inauguration, and June.
The arrest was also similar to that of Alex Padilla, a Democratic senator from California and outspoken opponent of the Trump administration’s immigration policies, who was handcuffed and forcibly removed when he tried to ask a question during a press conference hosted by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem in Los Angeles last week.
One week prior to the Democratic race for mayor, Lander was also arrested. His opponents include Cuomo, Mamdani, Adrienne Adams, Scott Stringer, Michael Blake and others. Hochul, Stringer, Blake, Adams, and Mamdani arrived at the scene of Lander’s arrest to support him.
