The victory of Donald Trump as the US president marks a significant change in domestic and foreign policy. Trump’s power also took on major changes in China’s matters with the United States. Both China and Russia see his success as a chance to take advantage of divisions within the United States. According to these nations, now it is easy to influence the country. For many years, China has used these divisions according to its matters and now the victory of
Trump gives them more opportunities leading to many problems in the United States.
It seems that with Trump’s presidency, the long-rooted tension in the US with China has become worse. The Project 2025 report from the Heritage Foundation supports this idea. According to some people, the report explores authoritarian rules. But the Trump campaign, Agenda 47, has similar ideas. The report pays attention to lessening the US dependence on China. In this way, the United States became more independent regarding to economy and making reforms. It also said that to counter China, Trump’s second presidency would work with many other nations.
Why the Project 2025 created?
The major objective behind the development of Project 2025 is to defend Taiwan with the assistance of the US allies in the Indo-Pacific. The US has decided to improve its military strength and allow more European and NATO nations to be involved in these matters. It also has a desire to share responsibilities for dealing with threats from China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea. However, for North Korea, South Korea will handle matters and enhance security by adding more THAAD units.
Both political parties agree that the main objective of the US is to work with other nations in the Indo-Pacific. This means that allies share responsibilities, and for this purpose, South Korea is on top. From the last few years, the US and Japan have had a good partnership, especially to counter China.
The United States has strengthened its obligations with Japan as a result of Indo-Pacific tensions, particularly those around the Senkaku Islands. Japan and the United States decided to collaborate further on military and weaponry development in 2023.
The US has enhanced its military alliances
Due to China’s growing technological power, the US has increased its military alliances. In 2022, both Japan and Australia signed new agreement deals just because of China’s increasing influence. Japan is making plans to join the AUKUS. It is a group that pays attention to advances in military technology. Furthermore, Japan signed an agreement with two other nations, Australia and the UK on joint military training and operations.
The United States is taking these actions as part of a plan to thwart China’s military expansion. However, given their close economic links to Beijing, it is challenging to persuade other nations in the area to challenge China. The United States uses alliances like ANZUS and the US-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty, which call for coordinated action against threats in the Pacific, to combat this. The East China Sea is one of the regions covered by the US-Japan Security Treaty.
To guarantee coordinated responses to regional threats, the United States has a number of defense agreements in the Pacific, including the ANZUS Treaty with Australia and New Zealand and the US-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty. Defense in the “Far East,” which includes regions like the East China Sea, is also covered under the US-Japan Security Treaty. The terms of the US-Taiwan Defense Treaty continue to shape American assistance for Taiwan’s security even though it expired in 1979.
Joint responses to threats in the Pacific are also a part of the 1953 U.S.-ROK Mutual Defense Treaty. Recently, the United States pressured South Korea to make its stance on Taiwan clearer. The US-ROK alliance, historically centered on North Korea, may expand to include more duties in the Indo-Pacific region, with a greater role for the US Forces in Korea. These shifting priorities are indicated by the creation of the Nuclear Consultative Group (NCG). South Korea’s dedication to its diplomatic approach is put to the test as it is under pressure to change its position. Future policy choices made by the United States will affect the area, particularly China and Taiwan.
