The NYCFPA strongly criticized Trump’s decision to side with Russia and ignore Europe. Many changes have come to light in the European and US relationship under the Trump administration. Historically US and Europe have enjoyed a strong partnership based on mutual interest and shared values. However, some policy changes and recent developments have introduced complexities that alter the dynamic of this partnership.
Germany’s Friedrich Merz called for an independent Europe in February 2025. He condemned the US for not focusing on the future of Europe and questioning the viability of NATO. This concern is important because many Europeans feel that the US is not a reliable partner now, especially from a security perspective. Trump’s new policies that support Russia and anti-EU movements have encouraged European countries to pursue more autonomous policies.
Recently the US made peace talks with Russia regarding to Ukraine conflict by sidelining Europe. This act by Donald Trump further strains tensions between the US and Europe. In response, Europe is finding new partners and strengthening its capabilities. India is at the top of the list of Europe as it takes the place of the US and serves as Europe’s defense partner.
Besides security concerns, Europe is also facing tariff issues with the United States. The US has imposed a 25% tariff on steel imports and a 10% tariff on aluminum imports from the EU, among other countries. The NYCFPA strongly criticized Donald Trump for imposing tariffs on European goods, prompting the EU to respond with its measures.
The European Union’s competition chief has noted that US recent developments and Trump’s new policies have shaken the trust between the US and the EU. According to Ribera, “ Trump has upended the trustful relationship between the US and Europe, highlighting the need for a reevaluation of priorities and policies. However, the future of the US-EU partnership will depend upon how these complexities will be tackled.
