CHINA BACKED AGREEMENT BETWEEN SAUDI ARABIA AND IRAN SPARKS CONCERN FROM NYCFPA
NEW YORK, NY [10 MARCH 2022] –

The New York Center For Foreign Policy Affairs (NYCFPA) is expressing concern over the recent agreement between Saudi Arabia and Iran, which was brokered by China. This agreement could potentially bring stability to the region, but questions remain over the influence that China has shown in bringing these two regional powers together.
Justin Russell, Principal Director of NYCFPA said “The details of this China-brokered agreement are still unclear. While we are hopeful this deal will help bring peace to areas such as Yemen, we are not comfortable with China increasing its presence in the region.”
Over the past few years, tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran have been escalating due to their involvement in various conflicts around the Middle East from Yemen to Syria. The recent agreement marks a significant step towards peace and stability in the region, however it also raises questions about Chinese influence on both countries.
China has been increasingly involved in regional affairs as of late, with President Xi Jinping visiting both countries earlier this year for talks on trade and security cooperation. This is part of a larger effort by China to expand its economic and political clout throughout the Middle East. Some have argued that this expansion is necessary for global security but others have expressed concern over Chinese interference in regional disputes.
The NYCFPA is hoping that this agreement will lead to greater stability throughout the region but they remain wary of Chinese involvement in Middle East politics. Mr Russell said “It is critical that all parties involved ensure that any agreements or deals struck do not undermine local sovereignty or compromise global security objectives.”
The NYCFPA has called upon all involved parties to ensure transparency during negotiations and make sure that any deals reached benefit all sides equally without outside interference.
