Panel Recap: Experts Discuss Communication Strategies in the War in Ukraine at the National Press Club

Washington, DC – On Thursday, December 12, 2024, the New York Center for Foreign Policy Affairs hosted a panel discussion titled, “Communication Strategies in Conflict: Understanding the Global Impact of the War in Ukraine.” Held at the National Press Club of Washington DC, the event brought together leading experts, policymakers, journalists, and academics to explore the pivotal role of communication in shaping public understanding and international responses to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Moderated by Anna Albuquerque, the panel featured Garret Martin, Hurst Senior Professorial Lecturer on Foreign Policy and Global Security at American University; Tanya Kozyreva, Investigative Reporter with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ); and Olga Khakova, Deputy Director for European Energy Security at the Atlantic Council’s Global Energy Center. Each speaker provided unique insights into the evolving dynamics of communication in conflict zones, the manipulation of narratives, and the global implications of disinformation.

The event began with opening remarks that set the stage for a discussion on the critical role of media and communication during wartime. Panelists analyzed how governments, activists, and media organizations frame narratives to mobilize support, influence public opinion, and shape international diplomacy.

The discussion also focused on the global ramifications of wartime communication, including its impact on international aid, refugee crises, and global public opinion. The panelists examined how conflicting narratives can affect foreign policy and erode trust in media institutions, as well as NATO’s strategic priorities in countering adversarial narratives while maintaining alliance cohesion.

Another key theme was the intersection of technology and communication, with insights on how social media, journalism, and traditional outlets influence wartime narratives. Panelists discussed the challenges journalists face in maintaining integrity amidst disinformation campaigns and explored opportunities to foster accurate and impactful storytelling during conflicts.
