The United States is only 2 weeks away from its 2024 election day. According to Microsoft’s Threat Analysis Center (MTAC) reports, Russia, China, and Iran are making efforts to influence US democracy. The government of the United States is continuously facing cyber and influence activities from these nations. Recently, it was reported that 3 Iranian hackers sent stolen information from former President Trump’s campaign to people linked to President Biden’s campaign. These hackers were charged for these hacking activities.
The main focus of the Iranian hacker is Trump. But Russian operatives turned their attention to Kamala Harris after the announcement that she also joined the race. Russian groups take the assistance of artificial intelligence to create false content. At the same time, Iranian actors are preparing for more cyber-influence tactics. History shows that foreign actors instantly spread the wrong information to influence people’s thoughts regarding elections. In this way, they can change election results. As Election Day gets closer, voters and officials must stay alert to any doubtful online activity. Remaining focused is important to getting fair election results.
Russia is actively making efforts to destroy the Harris-Walz campaign through fake videos. They misled the people by presenting her wrong image. For this purpose, Russian operators used advanced technology to misrepresent Kamala Harris. One video shows that she allegedly insulted former President Donald Trump. At the same time, another video from a Kremlin-linked group called Storm-1516, falsely claims she is involved in illegal poaching in Zambia.
Furthermore, another fake video is spreading that has misled people with the wrong information. The video is about Tim Walz, the Democratic vice presidential nominee, gaining over 5 million views on X in just one day.
However, these fake videos did not engage a large number of views. It only demonstrates how Russia is trying to influence American citizens and create political division. Now creators use the platform of Twitter instead of Instagram to better grab the attention of viewers.
This shift highlights the evolving tactics used in disinformation campaigns, aiming to stir up discord and undermine political campaigns in the US.
Iran and its cyber influence efforts
Iran, one of the great supporters of Hamas, is also continuing its cyber-influence efforts despite growing tensions in the Middle East. Iran has severe conflicts with Israel, even though the nation is still focused on how to influence the United States audiences. Groups under the leadership of Iran forced many American citizens to boycott elections because the candidates stood in favor of Israel. This highlights Iran’s efficient strategy to create division inside the United States.
One of another Iranian groups is also caught by monitoring the United States’ election-related websites and media outlets. This suggests that they are still making efforts to influence citizens as elections come closer. Looking back into the history of Iran, the nation has a record of interfering in elections. The ongoing actions of Iran highlight the consistent threats.
The combination of these activities indicates Iran’s determination to disrupt social and political stability in the US through cyber efforts and manipulation.
China’s influence has been concentrated on Republican lawmakers and candidates who oppose its policies. Rep. Barry Moore, Sen. Marsha Blackburn, and Sen. Marco Rubio are among the people that will be targeted. These initiatives include disseminating antisemitic statements, making claims of corruption, and endorsing rival politicians. Although these campaigns don’t usually receive much attention, they demonstrate China’s continuous efforts to have a variety of political sway over the United States.
Manipulated photos and films can spread more swiftly than usual during times of conflict and competitiveness. During these times, foreign players like China, Russia, and Iran have been successful in disseminating false information, frequently with the aid of cutting-edge technology like artificial intelligence. These strategies are meant to raise questions about how fair elections are. To increase awareness and shield institutions from outside influence, the Monitoring Threat Activity Center (MTAC) will continue to monitor these activities and disseminate updates.
