For the first time since the elections during the Iraq War in 2004 and 2008, foreign policy is a major focus in the current US presidential race.
Recent polls show that voters are more caring about foreign policy than anything else.
In the past many problems brought the Americans together. It includes the Cuban Missile Crisis, Iran hostage crisis, or 9/11 attacks. But nowadays all complexities across the world divide people. According to a recent report, only 38% of voters approved the Joe Biden foreign service policy decision. Also this decision dont get any fame.
At this time there are 3 major international problems that are affecting how people think. The first one is the conflict between Hamas and Israel and the aftermath of the Hamas attack on Israel. The 2nd one is the war between Russia and Ukraine. And the last one is Venezuela trying to take oil reserves from Guyana.
Many of you may be unfamiliar with these foreign issues but these problems are the big hurdle to bring peace across the world. Also all of these issues make people uneasy and think that things are not going in the right direction.
Conflict Between Israel And Hamas
Many people think that Hamas is a terrorist group especially after Hamas attacked Israel on October 7th. The voters of the United States support Israel after this incident. This also highlights the growing antisemitism in the country and worldwide.
This situation has forced many non-political leaders to come in the field of politics including Elisha Wiesel, the son of Holocaust survivor and author Elie Wiesel. Elisha is featured in an ad against Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.) for denying the clear facts about the October attacks.
This Hamas attack not only affected the Israel region but also challenged the United State diplomatic efforts. It also raised the question on US promises to allies. On a political aspect this incident weakened Joe Biden’s position with only 3 voters.
Russia and Ukraine war
In 2022 Russia attacked Ukraine. This attack was the biggest assault on the European nation after World War II.
After this incident President Biden went to Kiev, the capital of Ukraine’s overnight. This was a bold move from the US president. However, the U.S. government’s decision to give substantial military aid and impose economic sanctions on Russia has sparked debate.
Some people show opposition to Biden’s action and said this act is forceful and escalate the conflict. While some argue that they are too weak and fail to support Ukraine’s independence and the U.S.’s global reputation.
Furthermore, different people show different opinions. Some think that the US should do more efforts to help Ukraine while others said the US already did its 100% to assist Ukraine. So, it is difficult for many political campaigns to find a balanced approach.
Venezuela’s aggressive actions in Guyana
One important but less talked about issue is Venezuela’s aggressive actions in Guyana, which is rich in oil. This situation is also seeing more Chinese involvement, and both are bad for America’s national security.
People who have knowledge about geopolitics are concerned that this action could lead the world into regional conflicts. Furthermore, also spread false information in Guyana’s media. The main purpose is to destabilize the country before the 2025 Presidential elections.
Some think that Venezuela might be preparing for war, which would likely get the U.S. involved to support Guyana. If America steps in, it could be a big problem for President Biden’s foreign policy.
One of the important things to consider is the natural resources and strategic location of Guyana. Further instability in Guyana could badly impact the global oil market. Also it challenges America’s influence in Latin America. Now the question is how Biden’s administration will handle this situation. Its ability will be the clear sign of how he manages international law, regional stability, and the complex politics of Latin America.
If we compare today’s politics with past one then both situations are different. Past complexities united the world while today’s situation divided US politics. Biden and its political partners are under intense scrutiny. At the same time his supporters argue that his experience makes him able to handle such situations.
