President Donald Trump made it apparent that he intended to prevent a full-scale conflict in the area only hours before Israeli aircraft launched a strike on Iran early Friday, igniting new concerns about it. He made reference to his diplomatic attempts to stop Tehran’s nuclear aspirations when he remarked, “I don’t want them going in because, I mean, that would blow it.”

How does the attack affect Trump’s diplomatic efforts?

The fact that Israel entered despite the US’s non-involvement and against the president’s expressed preferences puts Trump in one of the most difficult situations of his fledgling presidency.

He claims that even as his senior envoy was getting ready to leave for Oman for more negotiations this weekend, the attacks ran the potential of undermining his diplomatic efforts with Tehran.

His already strained relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with whom he has been at odds for months and who he just asked to postpone a strike, is tarnished by this. Additionally, it offers him yet another international crisis that has no simple conclusion, one in which tens of thousands of US soldiers might get caught in the crossfire in the region.

How is Trump handling pressure from both party factions?

Trump will now have to choose between opposing factions within his own party. However, especially during his second administration, Trump has never fully embraced that aspect of his party’s foreign policy. Starting with his vice president, his government is full of personnel who have a very pessimistic view of US military engagement overseas without explicitly putting US interests at risk.

In the immediate wake of the assaults, Trump did not indicate that he was willing to utilize U.S. military resources to assist in protecting Israel from anticipated Iranian retaliation, as his predecessor, Joe Bide,n did during last year’s firefight between Israel and Iran.

Israel’s air defenses might not be able to repel a significant Iranian attack without US support.

Instead, the US administration’s public messaging emphasized safeguarding US forces in the Middle East and cautioning Iran from involving the US in the conflict. The president and his team were barely surprised by the attack, despite the complex dynamics that Trump must now navigate.

Was Trump aware of the Israeli strike before it happened?

According to insiders, despite Trump’s repeated attempts to persuade Netanyahu to stop, the president and his advisors knew the attacks were probably imminent even as he spoke from the East Room on Thursday.

Trump was making an appearance on the South Lawn at a congressional picnic just as the strikes were starting. According to a White House official and other sources, he later went back to the West Wing to meet with high-ranking officials. Secretary of State Marco Rubio later made a brief statement in an attempt to disassociate the United States from any involvement in the assault. The message made it plain that this would be Israel’s fight, not Trump’s, without even using platitudes that expressed support for Israel and its security.
