Tech mogul and owner of X, Elon Musk, took to social media to announce his exit from the Trump government, a move that the White House confirmed was underway on Wednesday evening.
“As my tenure as a Special Government Employee concludes, I want to express my gratitude to President Trump for the chance to minimize wasteful spending,”
he noted on X.
“The DOGE assignment will increasingly strengthen as it integrates into the fabric of government operations,”
he stated, referring to his Department of Government Efficiency.
As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending.

The @DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government.
How much power did Musk hold as a federal employee?
A man who previously referred to himself as Trump’s first friend left in a swift and unceremoniously manner. According to unknown sources, X owner announced his withdrawal from the administration without having a formal conversation with US president. The source also stated that top staff members decided to leave.
The ultra-rich billionaire Musk has explained his appointment as an unelected authority who was given incredible power by the US president to dissolve portions of the American administration. Around May 30, his 130-day term as a special federal employee under the Trump administration was about to end. DOGE’s attempts to reorganize and reduce the size of the federal government will continue, according to statements made by both Musk and the administration.
What led to Musk’s fallout with Trump officials?
Throughout the week, he has been making indications that he is leaving Washington and that he will return to his business endeavors. He voiced his annoyance at the reaction to his signature DOGE’s efforts and harshly criticized Trump’s expenditure proposal. Musk condemned the president’s flagship tax legislation, deeming it too costly and detrimental to his efforts in enhancing government efficiency.
“The state of the federal bureaucracy is significantly worse than I realised,”
he said.
“I believed there were issues, yet improving things in DC is undoubtedly an uphill struggle, to put it mildly.”
Musk also informed the Post that Doge was scapegoated for every issue that arose during the Trump White House era.
Why did Musk clash with Peter Navarro and others?
In addition to publicly denouncing White House trade advisor Peter Navarro as a fool for rejecting Musk’s proposal for zero tariffs between the US and Europe, Musk had a private falling out with certain cabinet-level officials. According to the NY Times, he recently complained to government officials about an agreement between UAE and OpenAI. Sam Altman founded OpenAI, Musk’s rival AI business. According to the Wall Street Journal, Musk has previously attempted to sabotage the agreement unless his business was involved.
How did Musk’s political spending influence his decisions?
According to the New York Times, Musk spent $25 million on the election, but the defeat of his Wisconsin judicial candidate also contributed to the billionaire’s current disenchantment with politics. According to a Reuters analysis of agency departures, Trump and DOGE have successfully reduced 260,000, or roughly 12%, of the 2.3 million federal civilian employees, primarily through buyouts, early retirement offers, and threats of termination.
Protests have been held against Musk’s political actions, and some investors have demanded that he resign from his position as Trump’s adviser and take a closer look at Tesla’s management. He said earlier this month that he would significantly reduce his political expenditures after spending close to $300 million last year to support Trump’s presidential campaign and other Republicans.
According to the New York Times, Musk promised Trump’s aides this year that he would donate $100 million to organizations under the president’s team’s control prior to the 2026 midterm elections, but as of this week, the funds had not yet been received.
