The three oil-rich countries of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar are the focus of President Donald Trump‘s high-stakes visit to the Persian Gulf area, which he is starting this week.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia welcomed Trump to Riyadh. He is scheduled to appear at a US-Saudi investment event later today, where Elon Musk is also scheduled to speak.

How is Trump reshaping ties with Gulf nations?

Trump’s first significant international tour of his new term coincides with the ongoing battle in the Gaza Strip between Israel and Hamas, the Palestinian terror group, and the ongoing nuclear talks with Iran. The stated focus is on business, yet the atmosphere is everything from serene.

The mission is part of Trump’s larger idea that “extremism is defeated [through] commerce and cultural exchanges,” according to White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt. U.S. relations with Gulf governments soured under former President Joe Biden, especially after Biden promised to turn Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman into a “pariah” for the 2018 murder of writer Jamal Khashoggi. However, Trump has changed his mind and adopted a more transactional strategy, which has improved relations with local authorities.

Will Saudi investments reshape the U.S. economy?

Saudi Arabia has already committed to investing $600 billion in the United States in areas such as stock market investments, technological transfers, artificial intelligence, and military acquisitions. Trump has stated that he thinks the Saudis might end up spending up to $1 trillion. Even while Saudi officials want to diversify their economy away from oil, Trump’s efforts to cut global energy prices might jeopardize those enormous investments, which still rely on oil profits.

Trump and bin Salman are anticipated to talk about a potential civil nuclear program and increased defence collaboration in addition to economic agreements. A possible rapprochement between Saudi Arabia and Israel along the lines of the Abraham Accords was formerly associated with such accords.

However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vehemently opposed Palestinian statehood, which Riyadh has stated it would not recognise until it is discussed. Trump’s journey is not expected to include a stop in Israel.

Trump referred to Hamas’ release of Israeli-American captive Edan Alexander as “monumental” in the effort to resolve the Gaza conflict and suggested it was a goodwill gesture before the trip.

What role does AI play in U.S.-UAE ties?

Additionally, the UAE will require American microchips if it hopes to strengthen its relationship with the United States and take the lead in AI globally by 2030. With a pledge of $1.4 trillion in U.S. investments over the next ten years in the areas of artificial intelligence, semiconductors, manufacturing, and energy, the UAE has gone even farther than the Saudis.

At a time when China was moving closer to Middle Eastern nations, particularly the United Arab Emirates, Biden had increased restrictions on AI exports to prevent such technologies from falling into the hands of enemies. The United States said Thursday that Trump will lift the limitations from the Biden administration.

Alongside Saudi ministers, White House cryptocurrency czar David Sacks, and other business executives, Trump will be the main attraction at the U.S.-Saudi Investment Forum in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Tuesday, the start of his hectic Gulf tour.

How is Qatar positioning itself as a key U.S. ally?

Before travelling to Qatar for discussions with Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and a tour of the American military’s Al Udeid Air Base, he will attend a Gulf Cooperation Council meeting on Wednesday. Trump’s final destination on Thursday is Abu Dhabi, where he will meet Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the president of the United Arab Emirates.

The Qataris are making every effort to impress Trump, and they have volunteered to utilize a royal Boeing 747-8, which is normally only used by the Qatari royal family, as Air Force One.

Qatar has strengthened its relationship with the United States since Biden designated it a significant non-NATO ally in 2022. It has hosted American soldiers and mediated delicate conversations, including continuing backchannel discussions between Israel and Gaza.

Additionally, Doha keeps in regular communication with Ahmed al-Sharaa, the new president of Syria who succeeded Bashar al-Assad and is currently pursuing sanctions relief and restoring relations with the West.

How does Iran watch the visit closely?

Despite the failure of a fourth round of Iran nuclear talks in Oman over the weekend, Tehran is anticipated to closely monitor Trump’s meetings in the Gulf. Prior to Trump’s arrival, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi paid surprise trips to Saudi Arabia and Qatar, perhaps with the intention of communicating with Washington on behalf of both countries.

However, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar—all three of Trump’s host countries—remain cautious about Iran’s aspirations.
