According to studies, Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna’s mRNA COVID-19 vaccines are highly efficient in preventing severe cases of illness and death, hence saving millions of lives worldwide. Numerous studies, clinical trials with thousands of participants, and careful tracking of hundreds of millions of doses have all determined that the vaccinations are safe. Serious adverse effects are uncommon, as we have stated. Despite the proof, an increasing number of people have lost faith in the vaccinations’ efficacy and are falling for bogus conspiracy theories that claim they are killing a lot of people.

Early cancer diagnosis

There is no evidence linking the COVID-19 vaccine to cancer. According to the American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute, there is no evidence that the immunizations cause cancer, increase its aggressiveness, or cause it to return. However, many who oppose vaccines have attempted to draw that link, asserting that vaccines can result in a type of cancer that grows especially quickly. They have called this phenomenon “turbo cancer.” As we have stated, it is not supported by evidence. Posts on Facebook and Instagram after Dr. Kelly Powers passed away on December 4 at the age of 45 falsely claimed that the COVID-19 vaccine caused or exacerbated her cancer. Months before the vaccines were initially made available in the United States in December 2020, Powers, a podiatrist and Fox News and Fox Business health analyst, received a diagnosis of glioblastoma, an aggressive kind of brain cancer, in July 2020. A screenshot of the title from an article published on December 4 by the People’s Voice, a website that frequently disseminates false information about vaccines, was included in posts on Facebook and Instagram. The headline said, “Fully Vaccinated Fox News Doctor Kelly Powers Dies From Turbo Cancer After Surviving On-Air Heart Attack.”

Health Struggles Intensify

A screenshot of an article from the People’s Voice with the caption, “Scientists Warn Turbo Cancer That Killed Kelly Powers Will Soon ‘Spread Like Wildfire’ Among General Population,” was posted on Facebook. In the coming years, there will likely be a significant increase in the number of turbo cancer diagnoses among the vaccinated population, according to the post, the post stated. Because glioblastomas are becoming more common in all age groups, experts are concerned that there will be more cases similar to Dr. Powers’s in the ensuing decades. By 2050, diagnoses could increase by as much as 75%. There is no proof that COVID-19 vaccines cause cancer or exacerbate pre-existing cancer, despite the possibility of mild, transient adverse effects such as weariness and injection site discomfort. Opponents of vaccines cite studies that they say demonstrate this connection. For example, America’s Frontline Doctors, a group that has disseminated false information about the pandemic on numerous occasions, highlighted a review article published in the International Journal of Biological Macromolecules in a Facebook post on April 16 to assert that “COVID-19 mRNA vaccines could aid cancer development.”

Pre-Vaccine Treatment Journey

However, the review paper we wrote was not original research; rather, it was based on other published articles. According to experts, the study misconstrued several research studies about the function of a specific mRNA modification used in mRNA vaccines. There is no proof that the alteration promotes the progression of cancer.

Coping Amid a Pandemic

One of the study’s co-authors, however, informed us that their case report had been misunderstood. Out of 14 mice that received a high-dose Pfizer/BioNTech vaccination injected directly into a vein, one died of lymphoma, according to a 2023 study published in Frontiers in Oncology. That is not how vaccines are administered to humans, and the study did not prove a link between the vaccine and the mouse’s blood cancer. As we have written, Powers had a rare and challenging-to-treat kind of brain cancer, and little is known about its etiology. Aggressive by nature, glioblastoma is a stage 4 brain cancer. It is an aggressive, rapidly spreading cancer with a terrible prognosis, according to the Glioblastoma Foundation. Although women and younger patients tend to live longer, the foundation reports that the median survival with treatment is approximately 15 months.
