In the coming presidential race, there may be a chance that Kamala Harris becomes the next leader of the United States. If she becomes the president then she definitely follows the Joe Biden foreign policy rules on issues like, Ukraine, Iran and China. Additionally she may pressurize Israel’s government to accept a two-state solution regarding the Gaza conflict. If Joe Bide4n don’t stand in the election campaign then Kamala Harris will be the leading candidate.
She also has many years experience from her time in the Senate and as Vice President. This is the reason that she can better understand global matters and solve them wisely. But she will also face many complexities against Donald Trump, especially with the ongoing issues at the US-Mexico border. Recently she was assigned a task to find the root cause of migration. But Republicans claimed that she is behind every problem.
Kamala Harris’ presidency will be the same as Joe Biden’s presidency. She follows all Biden’s rules and looks like a second Biden term.
A former Middle East negotiator for Democratic and Republican administrations stated, “ “She may be a more energetic player but one thing you shouldn’t expect — any immediate big shifts in the substance of Biden’s foreign policy.”
Kamala Harris is clear in her plans. She is determined to follow Biden’s strong support for NATO. She also helped Ukraine in the Russia-Ukraine war. This type of thinking is totally opposite from Trump. Donald Trump wants to change the US-NATO relationship. He is also against helping Ukraine and providing this nation with any military help.
Harris, a lawyer and former California attorney general, had a tough start in Biden’s term because she was given the hard task of dealing with immigration during record crossings at the US-Mexico border. In 2022, she did not perform well in her presidential Campaign. But at this time, Democratic believe that if Harris wins, she will better explain the foreign policy plans.
Recently, Harris, the first Black and Asian American vice president, has become more known for her work on issues like China, Russia, and Gaza, and many world leaders now know her.
In her speech at the Munich Security Conference, she strongly criticized Russia for invading Ukraine. She also promised that the United State will fully support NATO’s mutual defense pact. The Kremlin dismissed her comments, saying they were just unfriendly and didn’t help U.S.-Russia relations. Kamala said that Russia’s actions in Ukraine are unfair and cruel.
In the case of China-US relations, Harris thinks that the United States needs to counter China’s influence, especially in Asia. Experts argue that Kamala follows Biden’s approach in case of US-China relations.
On China, Harris supports the common view in Washington that the U.S. needs to counter China’s influence, especially in Asia. Experts think she would continue Biden’s approach of challenging China when needed while looking for ways to cooperate.
Furthermore, she made many trips to improve the relationship with Asia. For this purpose she visited Jakarta in September to attend an ASEAN summit in place of Biden.
Harris also visited Japan and South Korea and assured them that the United States would stand with them and provide full security aid.
According to Murray Hiebert from the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Harris did well in promoting Biden’s focus on the Indo-Pacific region, even though she doesn’t have Biden’s long experience in diplomacy.
However, sometimes Kamala also made mistakes like her boss. One of the clear mistakes is, when she unconsciously mentioned the United State alliance with the Republic of North Korea. If she wins the elections and becomes the US president, then solving the Israel-Gaza conflict will be her top priority. She is in favor of Israel like Bidens but also opposed them sometimes. Some think she might take a tougher stance on Israel than Biden. However, major changes in US policy are unlikely. Harris’ former adviser says her support for Israel is as strong as Biden’s. This week, she’ll meet Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu.
After the recent nuclear progress of Iran, definitely Haris will criticize Iran. This is because Iran’s nuclear deal makes the United States unhappy. Jonathan Panikoff who is one of the US official government members said that the Iran nuclear threat could put Harris in great trouble.
Biden hasn’t been interested in talking to Iran about the 2015 nuclear deal, and Harris probably won’t either unless Iran shows it’s willing to make some changes. Panikoff, now at the Atlantic Council, believes Iran will be one of the biggest issues for the next president.
