The failure of the United State foreign policy against Houthis

The failure of the United State foreign policy against Houthis

It is very worrying to know that on July 20, Israeli air force’s attack on the Yemeni port of Hodeidah. The port is under the control of Houthi militia. According to the latest report, six people died due to a big explosion at a fuel storage facility and a power plant. Actually this attack is the response to a drone from Yemen that hit Tel Aviv on July 19. And in this hit only one person died.

The Houthis attack on Israeli territory is one of the big achievements. This is because the main purpose of this attack was to get past Israel’s defense system. After the conflict of October 2023, this attack caused too much damage in Israel territory. Israel’s decision to attack civilian areas instead of military ones shows that tensions in the Red Sea region might turn into a serious conflict.

Victory of Houthi’s

Houthi’s stand in support of Hamas and Palestine. This attack is the proof of this support. Many Palestinians fight against Israeli forces. Furthermore, in order to save the lives of Palestinian, they attack Israel by launching missiles and drones at Israel. The purpose of these missiles was to just demand an end of the conflict. However, Israel’s strong defense system stopped the attack.

After it the Hothis started to target ships that linked to Israel or its near region. In response to this action of Houthi’s, the United State and some Western countries started an operation in the Red Sea. The aim of this operation is to protect these routes and prevent attack from Yemen. But this attempt of the US and its allies has not been successful.

For a long period the attack from Houthi continued and showed no sign of stopping. Back to January, when they sent 18 drones, two anti ship cruise missiles, and an anti ship ballistic missile. However, the United State and British forces tried their best to stop all of them and also succeeded. After two days, allied forces hit back with airstrikes on Houthi military targets in Yemen.

But the attacks on shipping lanes didn’t stop and caused damage to many ships. Missiles from Yemen kept targeting Israel. In mid-March, a missile got through Israel’s defenses and exploded near the port of Eilat. In April, the Houthis joined Iran in attacking Israel with missiles and drones after some Iranian officials were killed in Syria.

On July 19, a Houthi drone made it deep into Israeli territory. This was seen as a big win in Sanaa, even though Israel fought back hard. These successes are making the Houthis more well-known, not just in Yemen, but in the whole region.

The attacks on Israel are helping the Houthis gain support beyond their usual base in Yemen, increasing their domestic and international recognition.

The United State get fail

It is also important to know that happiness in Sanaa and complexities in Washington are two different things. The fight between the United State and Houthi continued for almost 7 months. And this fight was very costly.

Back to january 2024, when the United State has launched many missiles at the Houthis. The cost of these missiles lie between  $1 million and $4.3 million each. However this attack got criticism and many said that how long the US can afford these expensive attacks.

Additionally, the United State also lost its expensive drones in Yemen.

The US is spending a lot in this fight. The total expenses of this operation lies between $260 million and $573 million every month, totaling between $1.8 billion and $4 billion so far.

But in conclusion this operation is not working according to the expectation. Due to this reason president Joe Biden was criticized by many citizens of the United States. He also won’t push Israel to stop the violence in Gaza, which could stop the Houthis. According to the Houthis, they stop the drone attack if Israel is ready to accept the two-state solution and stop attacking Hamas.

While the Biden administration allows Israel to continue destroying Gaza land and also ignoring legal ways and international laws. These attacks from Israel not only had an impact on Palestinian also targeted the Houthis. It also fueled tensions with Hezbollah in Lebanon and Iran.

Despite claims to the contrary, the administration has done little to prevent escalating violence that could lead to a regional war. As Biden decides not to run for re-election, he’ll likely be remembered as the president whose policies contributed to one of the worst crises in the Middle East in recent times.
